Regular Sunday School for the younger kids. Then right after church, we will have a field trip to the Heifer Project's Overlook Ranch in Rutland, MA, for the annual harvest festival. Heifer Project is a hunger-relief organization that provides farm animals to needy families around the world. The ranch has a "global village" with typical homes from all over the world and many, many cute farm animals. The harvest festival features hay rides, food, eductional activities for kids, and the opportunity to explore the homes in the global village. Those of us who went last year had a great time, and people of all ages would have fun. Rutland is about one hour away from Medford. I researched the cost of ordering a bus, but it is too expensive, so we can carpool. People should pack their lunches. The entry cost is $5 per car.
This is the web link: www.heifer.org and the direct link to Overlook Farm. Invite a friend!

Subject: Bishop Cederholm writes from Lambeth
July 24, 2008
Dear Friends,
“What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8) Today, more than 1,200 bishops, dressed in purple cassocks, and spouses in some awesome hats (the female spouses, that is!) walked in downtown London to Lambeth Palace singing “We are marching in the Light of God” as a sign of solidarity with the efforts of governments, NGOs and faith communities, especially the Anglican Communion, to “Keep the Promise” made by the UN to halve world poverty by 2015. On some of the specific Millennium Development Goals besides poverty there has been little, if any, progress in the past few years. A rally following the march featured Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s appreciation for the Anglican Communion’s efforts and commitment to the goals and his plea to advocate the goals with our governments, joining him and world leaders at the UN on Sept. 25 in sending the message that they must keep the promises they have made to the world’s poor, women and children. For me the march was the most significant moment thus far in the conference, where I felt, as a communion, we were truly “marching in the Light of God.”
Following the march and rally the bishops and spouses moved to a beautifully decorated tent seating 1,200 for a lunch that made me uncomfortable. Archbishop Rowan and his wife, Dr. Jane Williams, were gracious hosts and gave us a marvelous feast. However, I suggest that at Lambeth in 2018 they serve, as many of our parishes have done, a hunger meal, where at a table of 10, one person gets a feast, two people get a decent lunch (all representing the most wealthy and less wealthy of the world), and others get diminishing amounts until the remaining three get water or nothing but bread. The table then talks about what that experience is like in light of the millions who are facing hunger, famine and starvation in the world, while a small percentage of the world’s population have a vastly disproportionate amount of food and wealth.
After lunch it was off to Buckingham Palace for tea with Her Majesty, The Queen. Tom, his brother, Geoffrey, and I got to chat with Prince Philip, who stopped at our place in the queue to ask where we were from. Queen Elizabeth was chatting with others close by about hats! (Wish Ruth Ann could have been there, as she is my fashion advisor and would have had brilliant advice for Her Majesty.) When Prince Philip learned that Tom was both a monk and a bishop, he said that being a bishop must come ahead of being a monk. Tom’s answer was classic Tom: “Not ahead of God.” Prince Philip was walking away and seemed amused and taken by surprise at his wit.
Wit aside, this reminded me of another aspect to the day that troubles me: Lambeth is indeed a significant gathering of bishops from all over the Anglican Communion. The media’s coverage, however, would lead many to believe that the Anglican church is primarily about bishops (the word ‘episcopal’ of course reinforces that). The world sees what we do and say these weeks as what the Anglican Communion says and does. We all know this is not true. The Anglican Communion of 77 million is mostly faithful laypersons who humbly serve Christ and the Christ in others. It is also tens of thousands of priests and deacons who have given their lives to Jesus, God’s church and God’s kingdom of peace and justice. We active bishops number less than 1,000. Who, then, is the Anglican Communion? Once every 10 years it seems to many to be the bishops, but we all know better!
Yesterday was hard and a blessing. We began the day learning of the Sudanese bishops’ statement asking Bishop Gene Robinson to resign and those of us who laid hands on him to repent. That was some of the buzz in many Bible study groups where honest and passionate points of view were offered as we discussed Jesus’ words: “I am the light of the world.” To me the Sudanese statement brought darkness, and I sought the light of Jesus’ compassion and love for all human beings, especially for the marginalized and oppressed. Others in my group saw the Sudanese statement as shedding light on the truth! Conversation was respectful and we practiced listening, but it revealed we were at an impasse if one group wanted Gene to resign and another group wanted to affirm God’s love for GLBT people. (Today I had a long talk with one of the Sudanese bishops resulting in his understanding that they are asking the impossible of Gene and us, while acknowledging that his culture must distance itself from the Episcopal Church’s decisions, partly for the safety of Anglican Christians persecuted by Muslim fundamentalists in his country.)
The hearing on the Windsor Report in the afternoon was hard. Some bishops condemned strongly the Episcopal Church’s actions as having “torn the fabric of the communion.” Others tried to correct the misinformation and some of the misperceptions in the world. The Episcopal Church in its adoption of B033 in 2006 made sacrifices for the sake of the communion and at the expense of gay and lesbian persons in our church. Some have not recognized this as an adequate response to the Windsor Report. In fact, earlier in the week, an African bishop said he had never heard of B033, which the House of Bishops approved, that said that bishops would not give consent to the election of another gay or lesbian person in a partnered relationship for a time period. He was amazed that the Episcopal Church had done that.
Given the inaccurate information being received, many in the Anglican Communion are led to believe that the Episcopal Church is in turmoil. We said, yes, there is pain and turmoil in some parts of the American church and we grieve the loss of some people, clergy, parishes and a diocese, but, by and large, the church is busy and dedicated to the mission of the Gospel through evangelism and outreach, including outreach with dioceses in the world that have not agreed with the Episcopal Church. We restated that we are orthodox, respectful of the cultural differences that have contributed to this conflict and dedicated to healing in the communion. We urged others to respect our polity which led to the affirmation of Bishop Robinson and to respect our boundaries which are being increasingly violated by incursions of foreign bishops into our dioceses. Finally, we said that an estimated five percent of people in congregations have left the Episcopal Church; the turmoil is not as great as some are led to believe.
However, the end of the day is when the blessings came. I attended a seminar called “Fresh Expressions” on emerging church models and start-up congregations within congregations and within neighborhoods reaching out to folks who do not and will not darken the doors of our churches as they are currently perceived. The success of these ministries in England and Australia, along with some models in our diocese, lead me to believe that we have much to gain from their experiences, as well as they from us, as we explore start-up congregations (cell groups in homes, young adult mission churches, coffee shop churches, etc) in our diocese and in New England.
The climax of the day was our gathering of bishops and spouses to meet and hear from Bishop Robinson. We had a lovely gathering with refreshments in a cloister. We showed a video from the Diocese of New Hampshire on why its members elected Gene and why he is a bishop they love and respect (including the voice of an African priest in that diocese whose theological understandings differ from Gene’s).
After Gene’s talk we shed tears of joy when persons who had never met or heard Gene, from Hispanic, Asian, Indian and African churches, remark how deeply moved they were by his truth speaking and compassion. One African bishop, whose primate had forbidden his bishops to come to Lambeth, said that he respected Gene’s presence and courage to be here when he was not invited, while 200 other bishops who had been invited chose not to come. My thought on his comment was: Who, then, loves the Anglican Communion more?
I am grateful for your prayers. I can’t tell you how much they mean to us. As I said at my own election, I am humbled that you have “let me to be your servant.” The Lambeth Conference is a clear reminder of how blessed I am by each and every one in the clergy and laity who faithfully serve with us to the glory of God, in witness to Christ our Savior and in the power of the Holy Spirit that is transforming our lives, church, diocese, Anglican Communion and all of creation.
Love and Peace in Jesus Christ,
+Bud

Subject: Bishop Harris writes from Lambeth
July 22, 2008
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
It is the second full day of the Lambeth Conference following our initial retreat. And amidst the worship, greetings, laughter, conversation and gatherings we began the day in our Bible study groups discussing fear.
Fear is powerful. It motivates withdrawal and angry encounters. It is the building material for walls of separation and it distorts reality. Fear causes us to react with panic or retreat to defensive positions.
We examined fear in the context of the account of Jesus walking on the troubled waters of the Sea of Galilee found in the Gospel of John, chapter 6, verses 14-21. When the disciples saw him, they were terrified, and Jesus said, “It is I; do not be afraid.”
There has been much anxiety in the worldwide Anglican Communion leading to this conference. At times the worry of division and the outcries of strident voices have brought some of our brothers and sisters to a place of fear about the continuation of our communion with each other. And yet even now Jesus comes to us in our troubled state and says, “do not be afraid,” for ourselves as individuals and as a fellowship in Christ.
Jesus is very present here. He is discovered in our common ground of mission articulated in Isaiah 61:1-4, which Jesus restated in Luke 4: 18-21. He is discovered in our open and honest sharing. He is present as we break bread with each other.
In my Bible study, several of us admitted to having fears about engaging one another here. Our diversity of theological interpretations and cultural differences are blessing and difficulty. But when we began listening to how and what we fear, together as a group, we discovered, first, that we are more alike than we thought, and second, in fear we were focusing on ourselves. Fear obscures our vision and perception, making us unable to clearly see Jesus among us and in each of us. (Fear is the basis of the exclusion of Gene Robinson from Lambeth.) In fear we focus on the troubled waters tossing us about and are not able to see Jesus who comes to us and seeks us.
Yesterday, Bud and I, along with a group of other bishops, walked with Gene across a nearby green to join an outdoor celebration of the Eucharist. There was reason for us to be afraid in going to this service: aggressive media, protesters and threats of violence towards Gene. Yet through the troubling distractions we walked on toward and in the presence of Christ. This afternoon when the management of the Lambeth Conference denied Gene access to our scheduled gathering of American bishops, it was fear that motivated that decision, over our several requests and objections. Fear again troubled the waters of fellowship, obscuring Jesus.
Every hour I meet people I do not know and who are very different from me, who have fears and are traveling with me on this sea called Lambeth. And in most circumstances, we have helped each other to see it is Jesus who is coming towards us, calling us out of our fears. We must not be so focused on the troubles that we cannot recognize Jesus. We must not be afraid. It is in and with Jesus that each and every one of us can continue together in our journey in life and faith.
+Gayle Elizabeth Harris
