Our Community

Grace Episcopal Church is a multigenerational, diverse and welcoming Christian community whichvalues shared leadership, service to those in need and nurturing all in the love of God.

The first service of the Episcopal Church in Medford was held on Christmas Eve in 1847. OnFebruary 15, 1848, the church was officially organized as the parish of Grace Church. In 1850 a church building was erected. In 1867 a generous offer of land and assistance was made by Mrs. Ellen Shepherd Brooks for a new building. It was designed by noted architect Henry Hobson Richardson.  The cornerstone was laid in 1867 and in 1868 it became a private chapel under Episcopal law.  In 1873 the family delivered the church to the parish, and it was consecrated by the Bishop of Maine. Additions were made to the back of the church building in 1882 and 1957. Over the years the Church grew and attendance was as high as 550.  The chimes in the steeple were raised in 1873, and cast by Blake Brothers Company, successor firm to Paul Revere's. The 90-foot tower contains nine bells.  The largest bell was given to Grace by the city of Medford for use as a fire-bell. The church was Richardson’s second church commission and is the oldest building still standing built by him. The stained glass window, “Rebecca at the Well” was created by renowned 19 th century artist John LaFarge.  Grace Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Grace Church is now a dynamic and viberant spiritual home to a diverse congregation of over 200 families with different racial, social, ethnic, cultural, family and religious backgrounds. Some are lifelong Episcopalians; some were raised in other Protestant denominations or in the Roman Catholic Church; some are new to the Christian faith; some are not quite sure what they believe.
